Everyone wants to focus on how the Giants will look at defensive end, but the linebacking corps has also taken on a different look. Former Georgia Tech standout Gerris Wilkinson couldn't hold off veteran Danny Clark for the weak-side linebacker job, but with the injury to Osi Umenyiora, both of the players will start.
I remember watching Wilkinson cover Randy Moss 30 yards downfield in the final game of the regular season in 2007. He has tremendous athleticism, but he lost a chance at a starting spot because of an injury during training camp -- and because Clark outplayed him.
Now, Wilkinson will start on the weak side and Clark on the strong. Antonio Pierce will once again start in the middle, and he's a bit perturbed that everyone wants to focus on Wilkinson and Clark.
"Our linebacker situation is no different from what it was last year," Pierce said. "I expect these guys to be out there and be heads-up with everything, as far as communicating, knowing what to expect from Washington, getting our film study in and going out there prepared."
The Giants will obviously miss Umenyiora in a big way, but I'm not sure shuffling a couple of linebackers will cause any problems. Kawika Mitchell had a nice season and Reggie Torbor filled in nicely. But I'm not convinced those two players are better than Wilkinson and Clark.
Much more to come.
