The Giants and Eagles both kicked the tires on former Bucs tight end Alex Smith -- and Philly signed him Tuesday. Les Bowen of the Daily News makes the important point that folks with L.J. Smith's No. 82 jersey will be able to make a smooth transition to Smith's No. 82.
"Coach [Andy] Reid told me that they love to use the two tight ends,'' Smith told reporters in Philly. "It's an offense I've been running the last four years [in Tampa], so he doesn't see any problem throwing me right in the mix."
The Eagles will begin the season with Brent Celek and Smith as the only tight ends on the roster. I think Reid liked what Tony Curtis brought to the offense in terms of his size, but Smith's the more versatile player. He was poised to become a mainstay in Tampa following a successful rookie season, but he could never regain that form. Perhaps a change of scenery will be good for Smith.
