The NFL announced Thursday that Washington Redskins linebacker London Fletcher has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Month for December. The 37-year-old Fletcher had three interceptions in his first four games of the month and two sacks Sunday night against the Cowboys in the last one. He was the only player in the NFL with at least three interceptions and at least two sacks in the month, and his 51 tackles tied for second in the league. He helped pace an improved Redskins defense while Washington went 5-0 in December to win the NFC East.
Earlier this season, Fletcher was struggling with an ankle injury that limited his practice time, but he didn't miss any games and appeared to get stronger as the season went along. With Ryan Kerrigan, Perry Riley, Fletcher and surprise star Rob Jackson, the Redskins linebacking corps turned out to be a strength of their defense in the second half. Washington finished 28th in the league in total defense but has forced 15 turnovers and collected 18 sacks during its current seven-game winning streak.
