With the Cowboys on their bye week, quarterback Tony Romo was able to have his No. 17 jersey retired by Eastern Illinois on Saturday. In 2002, Romo won the Walter Payton Award as the most outstanding player in the Football Championship Subdivision (then known as Division I-AA).
"It was such an honor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame here, and with the jersey ceremony, it holds a special place in your heart," Romo told reporters. "This is a very rewarding experience."
Romo sat down do talk about his time at Eastern Illinois in this video. Romo's Panthers won their homecoming game against Tennessee Tech 23-15 on Saturday. Years before Romo arrived on the EIU campus, Sean Payton was the quarterback for the Panthers. And Payton, now the head coach of the Saints, was instrumental in Romo's development with the Cowboys.
