PHILADELPHIA -- Because Eagles coach Andy Reid rarely leans on his running game, it was odd to see more than 40 reporters surrounding both LeSean McCoy and Leonard Weaver following Sunday's 40-17 win over the Giants. Weaver looked the most shocked. He had spent the entire week of practice working on his pass protection and had no clue that he would become a playmaker for the Eagles on Sunday.
But with Brian Westbrook out with a concussion, Weaver finished with eight carries for 75 yards and a touchdown. The Giants had no answer for him -- especially on a 41-yard touchdown run early in the game. Forget the Wildcat formation, the Eagles have Weaver.
After growing up in Florida, Weaver played college football at Carson-Newman. He started out as a linebacker and eventually became a Division II All-American tight end. The Seahawks signed him as an undrafted free agent in '05 and he eventually became their starting fullback. The Eagles signed Weaver to a one-year deal in free agency last March and it wouldn't surprise me if they lock up the 27-year-old player for a couple of more years soon.
It was a little more than a year ago that Weaver had his biggest day as a pro with four catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns in a win over the 49ers. Now he's given Reid another weapon to consider.
