Giants running back Brandon Jacobs joined ESPN 1050 in New York on Monday to discuss how his team ended up at 5-4 heading into the bye. Thanks to sportsradiointerviews.com for sending this our way. Jacobs, who's never been one to hold back his opinions, was asked about offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride's playcalling in Sunday's loss to the Chargers.
"Coach Gilbride has been doing a good job calling plays," said Jacobs. "He’s been doing this for 20 years. He knows exactly what he’s doing, the whole coaching staff does. I love to see Ahmad [Bradshaw] in there getting runs because he’s actually making me excited when we get in there and run the ball. We just gotta find a better way to try to win football games. That’s all we're concerned about now, each guy in the locker room, we just want to try to find a way to win."
Jacobs was also asked about his prediction that the Giants would have 13 wins this season. If my math's correct, the Giants no longer have that opportunity.
"I don’t regret saying that because we’ve got a good football team, we’ve got great coaches and we work very hard," Jacobs said. "That’s one I’m going to have to deal with for making that prediction. That’s what I really thought then. We had a good team and I really believed that. It just so happened that we have not been playing as good of football as we can play and have penalties and those mistakes. [We're] really beating ourselves."
When I start hearing teams talk about "beating themselves," it sounds they're in denial. When you get blown out by the Saints and Eagles, you're not simply beating yourselves. Those teams overwhelmed the Giants. I think the Giants will get back in the playoff race this season, but they'll have to make some significant changes. I think that starts with defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan doing a much better job in putting his unit in position to succeed. Yes, the Giants have lost several players this season but they don't have the market cornered on injuries. Other teams (Colts) are losing players left and right, but they keep finding a way to win.
