Bobby Carpenter had taken his wife to Napa Valley (Calif.) for a birthday trip when he received word that he was likely being traded to the Rams for offensive tackle Alex Barron. Well, the Cowboys and Rams made the trade official this afternoon.

Once the deal was done, Carpenter was kind enough to join us on 103.3 ESPN's "Galloway & Company" this afternoon. He admitted to feeling some disappointment about how things went with the Cowboys, but he's looking forward to the opportunity to play in a 4-3 scheme with the Rams.

"I think it's a great opportunity for me," said Carpenter on Monday. "I get a chance to go to a 4-3. I'm getting a chance to start fresh, to start over and hopefully earn my way up here."

Carpenter said he was disappointed because of some "unfinished business" with the Cowboys. The scouts I've talked to across the league believe that Carpenter is much better suited for the 4-3 scheme. He sat down Monday with Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo and they discussed his future. There's a great chance that Carpenter will start at weakside linebacker for Spagnuolo, the architect of the defense that led the Giants to a Super Bowl title in '07.

We asked about how difficult it was for Carpenter to prove himself to Wade Phillips after being drafted by Bill Parcells.

"He didn't have a tremendous body of work on me from my rookie year," Carpenter said of Phillips. "Some days I felt like I was treading water in quicksand."
