I appreciate your patience this week while I've been researching a feature story on Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith, who is being projected as a high draft pick. Smith went to high school at Dallas W.T. White, where he played tight end at about 215 pounds.

What some people don't know is that Smith's first love was roping steers on an 80-acre ranch in Kaufman (Texas) County. To this day, he still attends roping events in the Waco area, but his agent has asked him not to participate -- for obvious reasons.

Today I spent a couple hours on Smith's favorite ranch, which is owned by his longtime mentor Glenn Cardwell. It's where Smith grew up working about 50 head of cattle and riding his favorite roping horse, Diamond. Smith even took the horse to Waco his freshmen year. Tomorrow I'm supposed to sit down with Smith and his college coach Art Briles on the Baylor campus. For you Eagles fans, Briles coached Kevin Kolb at Houston.

Just wanted to bring you up to date. Go about your day in peace.
