Osi Umenyiora wins Player of the Month
By Dan Graziano
The league has named New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for October. It may have had something to do with his seven sacks and six forced fumbles in four games.
The Giants were 1-2 when Mathias Kiwanuka was sidelined with a neck injury. Umenyiora responded with the best stretch of his career as the Giants ran off four straight wins to take over the NFC East lead. He had three consecutive multiple-sack games and he forced two fumbles in each of those wins.
Umenyiora is second in the league with eight sacks and he's first in forced fumbles with seven. He's the first Giants defender to win this award since Michael Strahan in Oct. 2001. Strahan happened to have 22.5 sacks that season. The NFC East blog will be taking a "break" to write a column on the Eagles now, so bear with us for a couple of hours.
