Even though the Cowboys have been referred to as "America's Team" for 31 years, it's still fashionable for other teams -- thanks, Ted Turner -- to lay claim to the moniker. The day after the Steelers' thrilling Super Bowl win over the Cardinals, our own Gene Wojciechowski was ready to call the Steelers "America's Team."
And with some down time on its hands, our friends at SportsNation decided to host a debate regarding which team deserves the title. I was asked, of course, to defend the real "America's Team."
Kevin Seifert, James Walker and Tim Graham made valiant efforts to argue on behalf of the Packers, Steelers and Patriots. Because everyone knows that the nation's fallen hard for Bill Belichick.
And if you're so inclined, we'd love for you to participate in the voting process. I don't think the Rooneys wanted any part of being "America's Team." The Packers sort of have the whole blue-collar thing going, but I still think they have a rabid regional fan base, not one that spreads across the nation.
The Patriots? Give me a break. Other than the team's colors, there's nothing about them that says "America's Team."
What do you guys think?
