Redskins plan to spend big again

By Dan Graziano

If and when the lockout ends and free agency happens, the Redskins plan to be big spenders. After a year away from the deep end of the free-agent pool, Washington GM Bruce Allen told the Washington Post on Friday that he plans to be very active once the new rules are established and he can go out and sign players.

GM Bruce Allen said the Redskins will be "as aggressive as any team" when free agency begins.
"We prepared for various options and will be able to be as aggressive as any team in the league based on what the rules are," Allen says in the story.

A lot depends on what the new CBA rules are, of course. If 2011 is another uncapped year that mimics the 2010 rules, then players with less than six years' worth of service time won't be unrestricted free agents. If there is a cap, there's a good chance the UFA pool will be much larger. Either way would suit Allen's apparent plan to add pieces once the lockout ends.

What kinds of pieces? Well, I still think they'll go out looking for a quarterback, because I think the John Beck stuff is a red herring. (Sorry, John. If it makes you feel better, I'm often wrong.) And while I like the Leonard Hankerson pick, I still think they could use some help at receiver. But the main goal for Allen once he's able to add to the roster should and likely will be the addition of pieces that fit Jim Haslett's 3-4 defense. They addressed this need with their first two draft picks, but they need more help, and I'd still expect their big-game hunting to occur on the defensive side of the ball, as they pursue guys like Nnamdi Asomugha and Cullen Jenkins.

We'll see.

I mean, at least I think we will. Sometimes you do have to wonder if the lockout will ever end, don't you?

Had a fun first few days with you guys. I'll probably slow it down on the weekend a bit, but I still owe you some mailbag stuff on Donovan McNabb and image makeovers, so look for that. Meantime, have fun racking up the comment total on the Eli/Romo post. That was all I dreamed it would be and more.
