Bruce Carter projected to start

By Calvin Watkins

IRVING, Texas -- After a week of trying to find answers, it seems Bruce Carter has found them.

Carter has gotten the bulk of the snaps with the first-team defense at weakside linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys and is expected to start Sunday night's game at the New Orleans Saints.

"So far so good," Carter said after Friday's practice.

Carter was the projected starter at the start of a season that has been filled with ups and downs. He lost the starting gig to Ernie Sims. But after Sims struggled Sunday in Dallas' victory against the Minnesota Vikings, Carter took over in the second half.

It seemed that Carter was still trying to regain the confidence of the coaches and reclaim the starting job he lost after allowing two scores at San Diego.

"I guess you could say that," Carter said. "I don't know. You have to ask them. I'm just out here trying to play ball and play my style."

Carter's struggles have come in the passing game, and the Saints love to spread the ball around. Quarterback Drew Brees has three players ranked in the top 20 in the NFC in receptions: tight end Jimmy Graham and running backs Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles.

Carter might have to cover all three of those players Sunday night.

"They got great weapons, and we're going to try our best to devise something and double-team them," Carter said. "Try to eliminate those guys and make somebody else beat us. But for the most part we got a great game plan, and we have to go out and execute it."
