Witten, Smith earn USA Football honor
By Todd Archer
IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten and left tackle Tyron Smith were selected to the All-Fundamentals Team by USA Football.
For Witten, it is the second time he was named to the All-Fundamentals Team, earning the first honor in 2010. The award goes to players who "employ proper technique, particularly when blocking and tackling, which fosters better on-field performance and inherent safety benefits."
According to USA Football, Witten, who caught 73 passes for 851 yards and eight touchdowns in 2013, was honored for his pass-catching form and looking the ball into his hands. Smith, who was named to his first Pro Bowl in 2013, was honored for his pass protection, "with active hands ready to punch out at oncoming rushers, he keeps a low center of gravity to maintain balance and maneuverability."
Witten and Smith will receive a $1,500 equipment grant from USA Football to donate to youth or high school football program of their choice. Fans can vote for the All-Fundamentals Team captains at www.facebook/usafootball. The three captains will receive a $3,000 equipment grant.
Voting runs through Jan. 29.
