LANDOVER, Md. -- Former Redskins coach Joe Gibbs just called the NFC East blog from Dallas, where his NASCAR team had been competing at Texas Motor Speedway. I'm saving most of what we talked about for an upcoming column, but thought you might enjoy what he had to say about Redskins running back Clinton Portis' amazing string of games with 120 yards or more. We're at five and counting.

"When we made the deal with Denver, I realized right away that when you got him to gameday and he put the pads on, he knew what football was all about. And that's what the team respects so much about him. He's the best running back in the league in terms of protecting the passer.

"Without the ball, he's the most impressive player I've ever been around. When you have a physical player at running back, it carries over to the rest of the team. I always felt better on gameday when I looked over and saw him getting ready."

We talked about Gibbs' retirement, his thoughts on Jim Zorn (loves him) and his respect for Santana Moss. He'll be watching "Monday Night Football" from a friend's couch in Dallas. That has to be a surreal experience to watch a Redskins game on TV with Gibbs. In fact, I may try that at some point.

We're only 20 minutes from kickoff.
