NFC East: Eben Britton

The ultimate rough draft

Each morning, the Beast visits at least 15 Web sites and blogs looking for updated mock drafts. Today we turn to ESPN The Mag's Chris Sprow, who had the good sense to bring some of the top draft experts of our time together for an aggregate mock draft.

This is a feature that most people have to pay for, but for one day only, I'm pulling back the curtain. Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr. joined folks from CBS Fox, NFL Network and Yahoo to come up with this mock. According to this list, here's who would end up with Beast teams:

No. 13 Redskins select Tyson Jackson, LSU

No. 21 Eagles select Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maryland

No. 28 Eagles select Eben Britton, Arizona

No. 29 Giants select James Laurinaitis, Ohio State

How does Mel's Big Board affect the Beast?

The NFL community stood at attention this morning as released Mel Kiper's updated Big Board. Mel's actual Big Board is kept in a secret location in Avon, Connecticut, that closely resembles Trey Wingo's basement.

As most of you know, the Board doesn't necessarily reflect where Kiper thinks players will go in the draft. It's simply his overall ranking of the players. That's why he still has Matthew Stafford going to the Lions in his (legendary) mock draft, but only has him third on the Big Board. The Highland Park (Texas) school board has filed a protest in an effort to have Stafford's "arrow" pointed upward on the Board, but even (lots of) money can't buy Kiper's love.

Kiper currently has the Washington Redskins taking Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith with the No. 13 pick overall, which would be risky based on his recent showing at the combine. I know the Redskins covet defensive end Brian Orakpo, but McShay has him going to the Browns at No. 5.

Kiper and McShay are pretty far apart on where Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno will go in the draft. Kiper has him going to the Saints at No. 14 and McShay has him going to the Eagles at No. 21. I tend to agree with McShay on this one. And honestly, I think Donald Brown is a better fit for the Eagles. Huge speed guy and I think he can make yards inside -- something the Eagles don't do very well. Both McShay and Kiper have the Eagles taking an offensive tackle with that second pick in the first round. But my gut still tells me they trade out of that pick and grab someone like Eben Britton in the second round. And yes, I think Britton will be there in the second.

The Giants might be able to take advantage of Hakeem Nicks' weight issues, but no one can be thrilled that the guy let himself go after the combine. Kenny Britt would be the safer pick. But general manager Jerry Reese explained to me at the owners' meeting that he doesn't feel any pressure to draft for need. Will the Giants have more clarity on the Plaxico Burress situation on draft day? Well, we're about to find out.

Please send your draft-related questions to the mailbag. I owe you guys a nice interactive experience here in the next day or so.
