NFC East: Jeremy Clark

Cowboys' Marcus Spears placed on IR

November, 10, 2010
Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marcus Spears (calf) and rookie safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (ankle) have been placed on injured reserve and they'll be replaced on the roster by defensive ends Jeremy Clark and Jimmy Saddler-McQueen, according to's Tim MacMahon. Spears has been one of the most durable players on the Cowboys' roster since joining the club as a first-round pick in '05.

Given his contract status, Spears has likely played his last down with Dallas. He was a steady player and leader for the Cowboys, but he was offered a lower contract tender than two of his backups this past offseason. He knew the writing was on the wall, but he was one of the few players on defense who continued to fight the past few weeks.

Clark has spent time with the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles while Saddler-McQueen went to training camp with the Cowboys. They won't likely fit into the Cowboys' long-term plans, but you'll probably see them on the field immediately based on all the injuries.

For now, Tony Romo (collarbone) will keep fighting to return to the starting lineup in December. I still think it's a long shot, but Garrett at least wants to give him an opportunity.

Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger is reporting that the following Giants have been released today:

QB Anthony Wright
QB Andre' Woodson
FB Robert Douglas
WR Marcus Monk
WR Brandon London
TE Eric Butler
TE Jerome Collins
OL Kurt Quarterman
OL Na'Shan Goddard
OL Andrew Bain
OL Digger Bujnoch
DE Wallace Gilberry
DE Alex Morrow
DT Jeremy Clark
DT Ogemdi Nwagbuo
LB Tank Daniels
LB James Terry
CB Geoffrey Pope
S Stuart Schweigert
OL Cliff Louis
CB Darren Barnett

Once the list is official, I'll provide some analysis. I assume the Giants will try to add Woodson to their practice squad, but another team looking to develop a young quarterback (the Cowboys) might swoop him up. The biggest surprise I see is defensive end Wallace Gilberry. Defensive end Justin Tuck was raving about Gilberry when I talked to him in Albany two weeks ago. I thought he made a pretty big impression on the Giants' coaches. Now, the Giants will try to sneak him onto the practice squad.
