With the news that Miami Dolphins defensive end Phillip Merling is out for the season with an Achilles' tendon injury, there's a Miami Herald report that the club might attempt to trade for Cowboys defensive end Marcus Spears. Dolphins executive Bill Parcells drafted Spears in the first round when he was head coach of the Cowboys in 2005, so he had a chance to be around him for two years.

And Dolphins defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers also has a strong rapport with Spears after mentoring him in Dallas. A trade at some point during camp might make sense because Spears doesn't appear to have a long future with the Cowboys after he received a lower restricted free-agent tender than backups Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher. With Igor Olshansky also in the mix, Dallas is deep at the position.

If the Dolphins are willing to part with a fourth- or fifth-round pick, I believe Spears could be had. I don't believe anything is imminent, but don't be surprised if the Dolphins come after the Cowboys defensive end two or three weeks into camp. And I think Spears would welcome the fresh start and familiar faces in Miami.

He handled his contract situation in a very professional manner, but that doesn't mean he was happy about it. He's been a starter for five years, but two players who've come off the bench are making more money.
