Will Colt Brennan start in this league?

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

I've always been told that Colt Brennan's a supremely confident guy, but I haven't spent a lot (any) time around him to verify that. But in reading his quotes this offseason, it's obvious that he's not bringing a hat-in-hand approach to the quarterback competition. When Jake Luce of Redskins.com asked Brennan what he could do to help Jason Campbell "excel," here's what he said:

"It's about pushing Jason to be a better quarterback," said Brennan. "It's about Jason knowing that other quarterbacks on the roster are ready to come in if there's an injury.

"Considering all the things that have happened this offseason, I think you can see Jason is much more driven than he was last year. I think last year he was trying to get comfortable in this offense. This year, you can tell he's got a lot more determination in what he wants to do and what he wants to become. In this league it all comes down to what happens on Sunday.

"For me, I don't know how much Jason and Todd will play in the preseason, but I know I'm going to play a lot. I think if I can have another good preseason, it will put me in the driver's seat for people to continue to recognize me as a starting quarterback in the NFL one day.”

Hmm. Am I the only one who didn't realize Brennan was "in the driver's seat" for people recognizing him as a potential NFL starter? I think he has a legitimate shot to beat out Todd Collins for the backup role, but it might not happen in training camp. If Brennan has an excellent preseason, then he could certainly push Collins. But if something happened to Campbell right now, I'd still be more comfortable with Collins at the helm.

What do you guys think? Would you like to read more about Larry Weisman? Do we think Campbell is pleased to hear that the young Brennan will be "pushing" him?
