The cases of Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, along with three New Orleans Saints players who are also subject to four-game suspensions, will be heard Friday morning in a federal courthouse in St. Paul. The Saints' players want a temporary restraining order that re-establishes their eligibility, while the Vikings players want to maintain the order they received Wednesday.

It's a complicated legal situation, but that's the Reader's Digest version. (Thanks to the readers who suggested that term as the name for this blog. We'll take it under advisement.)

The bottom line is we could well know the immediate fate of all five players by the end of Friday. As always, we'll keep you informed.

For now, let's take a spin around the NFC North:

  • Vikings right guard Anthony Herrera has missed two days of practice following the death of his brother. Herrera could return Friday, but coach Brad Childress said it's not certain he will be in the starting linup Sunday at Detroit. Rick Alonzo of the St. Paul Pioneer Press explains the situation.
  • Mark Craig of the Star Tribune suggests that Minnesotans take note of the Bills' deal to move one game per season to Toronto. The Vikings' lease at the Metrodome expires after the 2011 season and there are no plans in place to build a new stadium.
  • Green Bay rookie quarterback Brian Brohm has spent much of the season evaluating what went wrong in training camp, when he lost a competition for the No. 2 job to fellow rookie Matt Flynn. One factor might have been a too-quick weight loss from 230 pounds to 218, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
  • Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has the NFL's second-best passer rating in play-action situations, writes Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
  • Chicago needs more production from tight ends Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark, writes Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times.
  • How badly is Bears defensive end Adewale Ogunleye's shoulder hurt? Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune looks into it.
  • Will Detroit pick up an $8.6 million roster bonus for cornerback Leigh Bodden this offseason? David Birkett of the Oakland Press examines the issue.
  • The Lions want to reduce the number of explosive plays against them, writes Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com.
