Frerotte's back still sore

EDEN PRAIRIE -- Minnesota quarterback Gus Frerotte is expected to spend Wednesday afternoon rehabilitating in a swimming pool, but coach Brad Childress still isn't willing to rule him out for Sunday's game at Arizona.

Frerotte was seen briefly on the Vikings' practice field during the team's morning walk-through, but he skipped his weekly media briefing. Childress said the Vikings are still working to "loosen up" Frerotte's sore lower back, but said a final decision about his status will be more about "pain threshold" and whether he can "defend himself" from an incoming pass rush.

"We'll just see how it evolves during the week," Childress said.

Tarvaris Jackson would start if Frerotte can not, a scenario that will increase in likelihood the longer Frerotte sits out of practice. The Star Tribune has reported that Frerotte might have a fracture in his lower back, but Childress is keeping the exact nature of the injury under wraps.
