It's a good thing I have no life. That way, I can sit home on a Friday night and catch up on all the news for a crazy-busy day in the NFC North.

We named our preseason Player of the Year. We had a Williams Wall ruling that in essence will allow Minnesota's starting defensive tackles to avoid four-game suspensions for another year. We had a significant turn in the legal case of Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Johnny Jolly. And, oh yeah, Vikings quarterback Brett Favre had the surgery he needed to ensure his 2010 return.

While all of that was going on, the Chicago Bears held the first two practices of their veteran minicamp. As we catch our breath, let's take a spin through the major storylines and observations at Halas Hall:

  • New tight end Brandon Manumaleuna won't participate in the camp after having minor knee surgery, according to Jeff Dickerson of ESPNChicago.com. Manumaleuna should be ready for training camp.
  • Michael Wright of ESPNChicago.com paints a picture of the "organized confusion" in offensive coordinator Mike Martz's scheme. Said quarterback Jay Cutler: "Everyone was really eager to get out here and see what it looked like. As a whole, I think it was better than expected. Guys are still thinking a lot. You're thinking about the play, you're thinking about the protection. Nothing's really coming quickly to anybody. The more we're in it, the more we're getting used to it [to where we'll] just be able to line up and play."
  • Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune noted there were "quite a few rough spots" in the offense's practice, but suggested that receiver Johnny Knox appears to be a perfect fit for the scheme.
  • Cornerback Charles Tillman was practicing as a right cornerback, noted Brad Biggs and Vaughn McClure of the Tribune. He has mostly played on the left side in his career, but it's not clear if the shift has any deeper meaning beyond offseason experimentation.
  • Defensive tackle Tommie Harris is only participating in one practice per day, a longstanding practice limitation. According to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times, Harris said: "The Super Bowl isn't won at minicamp. It feels good just to be out here."
