  Basanez

In the overall scheme of things, Chicago's signing of former Northwestern quarterback Brett Basanez is not major news. But it's worth noting that the Bears have been intrigued with Basanez for some time.

The Bears tried to sign Basanez as an undrafted free agent in 2006, but he opted for Carolina instead and appeared in one game as a rookie. He spent 2007 on injured reserve and was a training camp casualty in 2008. After he was released, the Bears looked into signing Basanez again before the Panthers convinced him to join their practice squad, where he spent the 2008 season.

No one's expecting Basanez to compete for the Bears' starting job, or even their No. 2 position. He might not even make it to training camp. It is a near-certainty that Chicago general manager Jerry Angelo will bring in at least one established veteran behind starter Kyle Orton. But it's always interesting to trace the legwork that goes into making the most minor of player acquisitions.
