Two of the Minnesota Vikings' top players from last season are now classified in rarely-used NFL roster categories.

Harvin
We all know that quarterback Brett Favre is on the reserve/did not report list, a status that is expected to change in the coming weeks. Now, however, comes word that the Vikings have received a roster exemption for receiver Percy Harvin. Judd Zulgad of the Star Tribune reports Harvin is a member of the "left squad" list. It means that he no longer counts against their 80-man roster and reflects the team's near-total uncertainty of when he will re-join the team. After all, it's unlikely the team would have sought the exemption if it believed Harvin would return in the coming days.

Harvin hasn't practiced or attended a team meeting since July 31, when he learned his grandmother died. Coach Brad Childress confirmed this week that Harvin has also been suffering from migraine headaches. But neither event fully explains a two-week absence during which Harvin and the team have had minimal communication.

Players don't begin receiving their salaries until the regular season starts, so moving to the "left squad" won't affect Harvin financially unless the Vikings exercise their right to fine him for his absence. But that course seems unlikely. Wednesday, Childress said: "... I think that the path that he's taking right now is the path that he needs to be taking."

Stay tuned.
