As you've probably heard by now, the NFL is reviewing a Deadspin.com report that suggests Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre sent racy messages and photographs to a sideline reporter who worked for the New York Jets.
Asked Thursday to address the report, Favre said: "I'm not getting into that. I've got my hands full with the Jets and am trying to get some timing down with our guys, so that's all I'm going to discuss."
Trust me, I realize how explosive this story could be. But let's all take a deep breath and go one step at a time. For now, all we know is that the NFL is reviewing the report and accompanying video. There has been no confirmed connection between Favre and the messages or photographs.
If we get to that point, we'll of course discuss what would be serious implications for Favre, the Vikings and the Jets. NFL discipline for violations of its personal conduct policy range anywhere from a fine to a suspension. Commissioner Roger Goodell has wide latitude in identifying behavior that qualifies for punishment; the policy covers all "conduct that undermines or puts at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs or NFL players."
Again, we're a long way from that point. We'll take this one step at a time.
