Thanks to reader Dan, who flagged this Westwood One video of Minnesota defensive end Jared Allen describing how he plans to celebrate the NFC North arrival of new Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler.
The key quote, which originally appeared on The Viking Age:
"Twice a year, I'm going to peel the back of his head off the turf. I love the guy, but business is business."
Allen made the comment -- laughing all the way -- during an interview this week at the Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas. We bring you the clip for two reasons. First, it's entertaining and we're all about having fun here in the Black and Blue. Second, I think it provides a good perspective of how "bulletin board material" usually originates from off-hand comments that hardly come across as sinister.
Many of you will interpret this as a blind defense of a bad-boy Vikings player, which it is not. Watch the video yourself. Allen says he had been texting with Cutler before the trade, at one point believing the Vikings had acquired him, and seems to have a friendly relationship with him.
The quote looks like classic trash talk in print. On video, however, it comes across as something less. Anyway, that should give you something to gnaw on a Friday afternoon.
