No deal yet with Stafford, Lions say
Is it Saturday yet? Unfortunately for everyone, we're probably due for a few more days like Wednesday, which featured Detroit denying multiple reports it was nearing a contract agreement with quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Stafford and the Lions might be an inevitable pairing, but as of late Wednesday afternoon, nothing had been finalized. The Oakland Press reported that team president Tom Lewand met Wednesday with owner William Clay Ford to seek final approval on Stafford's contract, and that only a "catastrophe" would prevent the Lions from securing a pre-draft agreement with agent Tom Condon.
Lions spokesman Bill Keenist termed the report "absolutely untrue," but you wouldn't expect the team to say anything different until it's ready to announce the deal itself.
I continue to believe Stafford is the Lions' likeliest choice at the No. 1 overall pick of the draft. There's just nothing official to report yet. Thanks for your patience.
