As promised, I've pulled together a roundup of news and observations on the first day of rookie minicamp throughout the division. Keep in mind how little happens in a spring practice that actually merits a significant conclusion. Players who are struggling have plenty of time to catch up, and those who look good now might entirely different players once the pads come on in training camp.
That said, here you go:
Chicago Bears
- Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that third-round receiver Juaquin Iglesias "looks the part" in terms of size and speed.
- Jeff Dickerson of ESPN Chicago on Iglesias' practice: "Despite the wet conditions, Iglesias caught almost everything in his reach on Friday. Slipping a few times on the damp field, plus working with brand new quarterbacks was a lot to process in one day for the rookie wideout."
- Bears coach Lovie Smith said he thought cornerback D.J. Moore looked good in drills, according to Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune. But Smith added: "You know the first time you see guys, they normally look that way."
Detroit Lions
- Sound the alarm: No. 1 draft pick Matthew Stafford was a bit wild with some of his throws, according to Mlive.com. This link also has some video of coach Jim Schwartz's post-practice news conference.
- David Birkett of the Oakland Press offers a thorough analysis of Stafford's day here. Stafford's best throw, according to Birkett, came to tight end Brandon Pettigrew.
- Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com thought safety Louis Delmas was the most impressive player on the field. That and other thoughts in this running blog.
- Here's a photo gallery from the Detroit Free Press if you want to see what Stafford looks like in a Lions uniform.
Green Bay Packers
- Some teams were projecting rookie offensive lineman T.J. Lang as a guard, but Friday he was working at right tackle, according to Greg A. Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
- Bedard also notes the Packers have kept intact the locker of Mark Tauscher, who is an unrestricted free agent.
- Coach Mike McCarthy was asked about the possibility of retired quarterback Brett Favre playing in Minnesota this season. Here was his answer, according to Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal: "If Brett wants to play football, he should play football. That's really my stance on it. If he still wants to play, he should take advantage of his opportunities."
