The count on Drew Stanton

You know it's a slow day in the NFL when superagent Drew Rosenhaus issues a Tweet about Drew Stanton. Yes, this is what Rosenhaus said Wednesday about the soon-to-be ex-Detroit quarterback:

"Don't count out Drew Stanton in the Lions' QB derby. Drew has all the ingredients to be a top QB in the NFL and he is ready to compete."

I mean no ill will toward Stanton, who through no fault of his own has been tossed around pretty good during his brief NFL career. But it sure seems like the Lions themselves are close to counting him out.

Daunte Culpepper is working with the Lions' first team-offense during organized training activities. (Here are some recent comments from Culpepper on the Lions' Web site, by the way.) No. 1 draft choice Matthew Stafford is the quarterback of the future and perhaps the near-present. That makes Stanton the No. 3 quarterback as of now, but general manager Martin Mayhew said recently he is "actively" seeking a veteran backup.

Such a move would give the Lions a credible option if Culpepper gets injured before they determine Stafford is ready to play. Unless the Lions decide to keep four quarterbacks, it looks like Stanton is close to a count-out -- despite the Tweetings of an agent.
