Looking back to move forward

ESPN The Magazine's David Fleming spent much of the offseason shadowing Detroit coach Jim Schwartz and produced this fun and enlightening timeline of what he found. You'll need an Insider subscription to read the entire piece, but this excerpt is my personal favorite:

Feb. 11, 2009 -- That sinking feeling
Schwartz completes his staff, then makes all of the members sit through a tape of every snap of the perfectly imperfect season. Then he makes them do it again. One coach says it's like being locked in a submarine at the bottom of the ocean for three days. Schwartz is sufficiently shell-shocked as well; his Lions look like an expansion team. So he chucks the depth chart, putting every spot up for grabs. "We have a lot of needs," he says, "but probably our biggest one is talent."

More than anything, I think that paragraph explains the Lions' flurry of personnel movement this offseason. At last count, the Lions had brought in 25 veterans through free agency, trades and the waiver wire. When I visit Detroit's training camp later this summer, I think I'll have to paste a copy of the new roster on my arm to keep track of everyone.
