As anticipated, the Minnesota Vikings were lightly represented Wednesday at the University of Washington pro day, featuring quarterback Jake Locker. The only confirmed team official in attendance was Kevin McCabe, their area scout who focuses on the west coast.
Unless there was a late change in plans, the bulk of the Vikings' decision makers were putting Auburn quarterback Cam Newton through a private workout at the same time. As we discussed Tuesday, the Vikings reportedly put Locker through a similar exercise this month.
Part of me thinks that a team with such a dire need at quarterback should heavily staff any event where a top prospect is throwing. But after watching the actual workout -- scripted throws to favored receivers against no defense -- you wonder how valuable it really is. Ultimately, personnel executives and coaches can probably see everything they need to from a tape.
