DETROIT -- As anticipated, the Detroit Lions have rookie defensive tackle Nick Fairley in uniform for Monday night's game against the Chicago Bears. The Lions, however, will be missing two defensive starters: Safety Amari Spievey (hamstring) and linebacker Justin Durant (concussion). Both players have been deactivated.
Special teams ace John Wendling will replace Spievey in the starting lineup, while Bobby Carpenter will make his second consecutive start for Durant. I thought Durant had a chance to play after returning to practice last week, but obviously the Lions are taking a cautious approach. According to local reports, Durant had post-concussion symptoms during pre-game warmups and was a late scratch.
The Lions have nine defensive linemen active for this game, meaning Fairley will probably have a situational role and not be subjected to an extensive workload in his first game of any kind since last year with Auburn.
Meanwhile, the Bears will be without defensive end Corey Wootton (hand) and running back Kahlil Bell but had no surprises on their inactive list. Safety Chris Harris is active and will start. Frank Omiyale will start at right tackle and Lance Louis will return as the right guard.
