Chicago gave us a rare 4-0 weekend in the Black and Blue. How rare? You’ll have to check out our current Twitter conversation to find out. (I’ll post @htphelps’ research in a Monday blog post.)
Two things jumped out at me about the Bears’ first victory in Seattle since 1976:
- The Bears were down to their third-string middle linebacker by the end of the game after Hunter Hillenmeyer left with a rib injury. But it was Nick Roach who had solid coverage on Seahawks tailback Julius Jones on the fourth-down incompletion that essentially ended the game. It takes a certain amount of organization to win a game with the backup’s backup at middle linebacker. True, Roach has been starting on the outside. But making calls and getting the team lined up right is an entirely different job. Impressive.
- Much like we discussed earlier with Minnesota and Brett Favre, I don’t know if the Bears win this game with someone other than Jay Cutler as their starting quarterback. He certainly made some mistakes, throwing an interception and losing a fumble, but I thought he made some pretty special throws and displayed some cool when the Bears fell behind. His off-balance touchdown pass to tight end Greg Olsen took some special crisis management.
The victory allowed the Bears to keep pace match Green Bay’s 2-1 start. Based on how each team has played since their Sept. 13 matchup at Lambeau Field, I have to assume the Bears are eagerly awaiting the re-match.
