Urlacher: 'It's not going to feel comfortable'

Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher had surgery this week to repair damage caused by the pounding of less than one week of training camp. So how will he and the Bears prevent a recurrence during the regular season, which the Bears open with two games in the first five days and ultimately play 16 games in 17 weeks?

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Urlacher suggested he'll sit out at least one day of practice per week to limit the pounding.

"The good thing is we have two days off after the games," Urlacher said, "and then we practice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. If I have to go two days out of those days and have a day off before the game, [that will work]. I'm sure we'll have to manage it. Plus I'm a little older now."

Indeed, it's quite possible the Bears would have limited Urlacher's practice time even if the knee was sound. But once again, it seems clear he will be dealing with this issue for quite some time.

Asked about the likelihood he will endure pain all season, he said: "It could be some, there might not be any, I don't know,'' he said. "I'm sure it's not going to feel comfortable all season long. I don't think after the first game, anyone is healthy."

You better believe, however, that opponents will be eager to test the deep middle against the Bears once Urlacher returns. If I were facing a 34-year-old middle linebacker with a bum knee, I know I would.
