NFL: Week 5 knee-jerk reactions

WEEK 5

| NFC EAST by Dan Graziano | ||
![]() | Eagles lose! Redskins lose! Yeah, Giants win, but we beat them. Big week for the Cowboys even though we were on bye. We're back in it, baby! | All of the issues that surfaced in last Monday night's loss to the Bears still exist. The Cowboys are a .500 team that'll look good some weeks and bad in others and probably won't make the playoffs. |
![]() | Ahmad Bradshaw ran for 200 yards? Is that a misprint? Man, if we can run the ball now, and with Eli playing the way he's playing, our offense is going to be unstoppable. | Yes, if Bradshaw and the run game can get going, the Giants' offense will be nearly impossible to stop. But he had exactly one 100-yard game last year and one so far this year. Let's see it again. |
![]() | Two more turnovers by Michael Vick in a game we lost by two points? He's costing us games with his sloppy play! When is Andy Reid going to bench this guy and put in Nick Foles? | Vick is 3-2 and has led four go-ahead fourth-quarter drives in five games. His 11 turnovers are far too many, but to think a third-round rookie who's never played real NFL minutes would be better is folly. |
![]() | Wow. RG3 got a concussion in his fifth game? That works out to three concussions per year. How are they ever going to be able to protect this guy? He's our only hope, after all. | RG3 ran fewer designed run plays in Sunday's game than in any of the first four. It just so happened he got knocked out of the game on one. He has to run, and they'll forever be seeking ways to balance his talent with the appropriate level of caution. |
| NFC WEST by Mike Sando | ||
![]() | Kevin Kolb, after taking 17 sacks in two games, will be lucky to last another week or two. | The Cardinals need better play from Kolb and their receivers to avoid falling behind and inviting pressure. That was the primary problem the past two games. Sacks should fall. |
![]() | Alex Smith has finally proved he's an elite quarterback and even an MVP candidate. | It's hard to argue those points. Smith leads the NFL in passer rating and Total QBR. He has good talent around him and is making good use of it. |
![]() | This is the best defense in Seahawks history. | Hard to argue that one. Seattle has held up against good and bad quarterbacks alike. The defense has allowed two touchdowns in the past four games. |
![]() | The Rams can contend for a playoff spot after going 2-0 in the division. | Let's see how the injury situation shakes out. Receiver Danny Amendola was one of the players St. Louis' already limited offense could least afford to lose. |
| NFC NORTH by Kevin Seifert | ||
![]() | The Bears' offense has hit its stride with receiver Brandon Marshall as the centerpiece. A 501-yard performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars is the evidence. | The offense didn't get rolling until the Bears' defense staked it to a lead. The Bears' defense has played the biggest role in a 4-1 start. |
![]() | The Lions need to come out of their bye with a victory at the Philadelphia Eagles to save their season. Otherwise, they will start 1-4. | A 1-4 start doesn't have to be a death knell, but the problem is their next game is a "Monday Night Football" matchup at Chicago. In other words, it doesn't get any easier. |
![]() | The loss of running back Cedric Benson will make the Packers a one-dimensional offense, which will further limit its effectiveness. | That might be a bit dramatic, but Benson is the only runner coach Mike McCarthy has trusted consistently this season, and even then, the Packers haven't always been balanced. |
![]() | Although they are 4-1, this still doesn't look like a team that will compete for the playoffs. | At some point in the NFL season, teams that stack wins have to be considered playoff contenders, even if they weren't expected to be or don't look like one. |
| NFC SOUTH by Pat Yaskinskas | ||
![]() | Tight end Tony Gonzalez has only gotten better with age. | This guy still is pretty darn good, as evidenced by his 13 catches on Sunday. But Gonzalez is thriving in large part because defenses are devoting all their attention to receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones. |
![]() | Coach Ron Rivera and general manager Marty Hurney are on the hot seat after a 1-4 start. | That may become true if this season really gets out of control. But Hurney has a close relationship with owner Jerry Richardson, and Hurney's also the guy who hired Rivera. I sense there's still time for this duo. |
![]() | Now that they've won a game, the Saints will go on a roll. | New Orleans is still 1-4 and that's a deep hole. But there were some signs the defense is starting to pick up Steve Spagnuolo's system, assistant head coach Joe Vitt will be back soon and the offense remains potent. |
![]() | The Bucs are going to take the cuffs off quarterback Josh Freeman as they come out of the bye. | I don't think Freeman suddenly will get to throw as much as Brees. But I think the Bucs recognize they need diversity in their offense and they need to let their young quarterback do more. |

WEEK 5
| Team | Knee-jerk reaction | Reality or not? |
|---|---|---|
| AFC EAST by James Walker | ||
![]() | The Bills stink. They lost 45-3 and showed no heart. It's time to fire everyone in Buffalo. | It's a knee-jerk reaction to fire everyone, but there are legitimate concerns in Buffalo. The Bills are 2-3. If they don't respond soon, the hot seat talk becomes legit. |
![]() | Rebuilding? The Dolphins are a playoff team right now. They should be 4-1. | Slow down, Miami fans. The Dolphins are playing hard, but they are 2-3 and need to string together more wins. |
![]() | The Patriots are a running team now. The three-headed monster of Stevan Ridley, Brandon Bolden and Danny Woodhead is the strength of the offense. | False. When the season is on the line, New England will always put the ball in quarterback Tom Brady's hands. This newfound rushing attack protects Brady and keeps him fresh for later in the season. |
![]() | Jets receivers stink without Santonio Holmes. Why not call Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson or Plaxico Burress? | New York's receivers are pretty bad, but the Jets appear to oppose adding a player with baggage to an already fragile locker room. A trade before the deadline makes more sense. |
| AFC WEST by Bill Williamson | ||
![]() | The Broncos are incapable of beating a good team. They have played three quality opponents and they have lost all three games. | That's how it sits right now headed into Monday night's game at 3-2 San Diego. The Broncos have been unable to make key plays on both sides of the ball in critical moments against better competition. Will it continue? We will see, but so far it is the theme of a 2-3 season. |
![]() | The Chiefs' season is in shambles. There may be a change at quarterback, Eric Winston has called out some fans for what he said was cheering Matt Cassel's head injury. Also, some fans paid for a banner to be flown near the stadium, imploring general manager Scott Pioli to be fired and Cassel to be benched. | Yes, the Chiefs are a disaster right now. They are 1-4, and the atmosphere is as ugly as it has ever been in the four-season Pioli era. It can change, but this is not a healthy situation right now. |
![]() | Oakland, sitting at 1-3, got back into the AFC West hunt as it watched the three other teams in the division lose during the Raiders' bye week. | The Raiders need to worry more about themselves at this point. They will not be in the race until they can show they can consistently win games. Heading into a game at 5-0 Atlanta on Sunday, the Raiders have lost three games by an average of 20 points. |
![]() | The Chargers will rue the Week 5 loss to New Orleans in which they allowed the Saints to score 17 unanswered points to win the game. | There is a chance that happens. The Chargers would have led the AFC West by two games with a win at New Orleans. They would have been in charge. Now, they have to regroup or risk being tied with the Broncos next week. |
| AFC NORTH by Jamison Hensley | ||
![]() | The Ravens haven't learned from last year, when they played down to the level of their competition. It showed in their struggle to beat Kansas City. This team lacks mental focus. | This has been a disturbing two-year trend for the Ravens under John Harbaugh. But, unlike last season, the Ravens avoided the upset. On the positive side, the Ravens always play their best against the better teams. |
![]() | See, the Bengals aren't for real. The wins over the Browns, Redskins and Jaguars weren't impressive. The loss to the Dolphins proved the Bengals aren't a playoff team. | I wouldn't go that far, because the Bengals have other chances to validate themselves. No one will remember the loss to Miami if the Bengals can play with the likes of the Steelers, Ravens, Eagles and Giants. The big concerns are the problems on third down and the struggling run game. |
![]() | Brandon Weeden isn't a franchise quarterback. The Browns should lose all of their games to get the No. 1 pick. Time to draft Geno Smith. | Weeden is making too many rookie mistakes and isn't in the same class as Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III. But there's 11 games left in the season. Let's see how Weeden looks at the end of the year before replacing him after five weeks. |
![]() | The Steelers are back. All they needed was James Harrison and Rashard Mendenhall. Beating the Eagles is the start of a long winning streak. | There's no doubt that the Steelers saved their season by coming back to beat the Eagles. But the Steelers are a much stronger team at home than on the road. Pittsburgh can break that trend Thursday night at Tennessee. |
| AFC SOUTH by Paul Kuharsky | ||
![]() | If they play like that, they are in big trouble. I mean, struggling with the Jets? The Jets?! That's just ridiculous. Mark Sanchez is playing horrifically and they have no playmakers and we had to scratch and claw. The Packers and Ravens will destroy the Texans if they play like that. | Not every week is going to be a blowout, and let's not call it a dud. The Texans made some big plays and maintained enough control to get the needed result. Every game is its own story, and what Houston failed to get done Monday doesn't tell us what won't happen Sunday night. |
![]() | Only five teams in the AFC have better records than we do. We are getting better faster than we thought possible. How crazy would it be if we sneaked into the playoffs in the first year of the rebuild? | Look, that was a marvelous win and the Colts certainly look to be ahead of schedule right now. But this is a team that lost to Jacksonville and still has a lot of deficiencies. Indianapolis should hope to carry the level of emotion it had against the Packers into every game, but that's not so easy. |
![]() | Time is up. There is just not enough progress. Gene Smith has had since 2009, and he's a good man but he's not getting it done. Last year we were counting down to Jack Del Rio's dismissal. We're right back there again now. | Hey, it's hard to hear pleas for patience and offer much more. But what choice do the Jags have? Smith and Mike Mularkey are hard-working, good men and likeable guys. But this isn't a very good football team. At least there is serious competition for last place in the division. |
![]() | This is the worst team in the league. I mean, they are on pace to give up enough points to set a world record. There is no spark, no leadership, no direction, no playmakers, no adjustments. And Mike Munchak stubbornly announces there will be no changes. Great! | There are a lot of numbers out of four or five games that you can extrapolate for a 16-game season that never pan out as dramatically as we think they will. Things are bad for sure. At least there is serious competition for last place in the division. |
