EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Minnesota coach Brad Childress claimed Wednesday he was unaware of any plans the team might have to extend his contract.
“I haven’t spoken to anybody about that,” Childress said before practice at the team's training facility. “I’m just focused on beating the Pittsburgh Steelers. That’s the biggest thing right now.”
There have been multiple reports and other indications that Vikings owner Zygi Wilf is preparing a new contract for Childress, whose current deal expires after the 2010 season. I wouldn’t expect Childress to say much about such a fluid situation, but I did ask him if it was something he would prefer to put off until after the season to avoid distractions.
“I prefer to deal with the 53 guys on this team,” he said. “That’s what we’re doing here. So I don’t even give the other thing any thought.”
Barring a tremendous collapse this season, I stand by what we discussed Tuesday night: It’s a matter of when, and not if, Childress gets a new contract.
