GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Here’s an interesting turn of events: Green Bay defensive lineman Michael Montgomery’s neutral zone infraction probably just saved the Packers three points.
The Vikings were all set to kick a 30-yard field goal and potentially add to their 14-3 lead midway through the second quarter here. No field goal kicker is automatic, but Minnesota placekicker Ryan Longwell is pretty close from that range.
Montgomery’s penalty, however, turned a 4th-and-6 situation into a 4th-and-1. After taking a timeout, the Vikings decided to go for the first down. But Ryan Pickett and A.J. Hawk stopped Vikings tailback Adrian Peterson on a rushing attempt, leaving the Vikings with no points.
Green Bay’s offense is going to have to start showing some life in order for that turnaround to matter. But for now, it’s kept the Packers in striking distance.
