My first thought upon watching Detroit’s sorry home loss to St. Louis was this: At least the Lions would beat out the Rams in a draft position tiebreaker.

Alas, however, my reach for positivity was denied. Quite literally, the Lions can’t win for losing. Head-to-head matchups don’t factor into tiebreakers when determining draft status. It’s strength of schedule, followed by a coin flip.
That’s a long-winded way of saying that absolutely, positively nothing positive came out of losing to the previously winless Rams in front of a crowd announced at 40,857. It was easily the sorriest day in the tenure of new coach Jim Schwartz, one that doesn’t bode well for his chance of turning around the team in the short term.
I can’t get excited about the return of quarterback Matthew Stafford, nor the surprising production of backup tailback Maurice Morris (63 yards on 14 carries). For a team to score 10 points against the Rams after two weeks to prepare is a sign of bad things to come. The Rams were averaging a tidy 30 points per game before Sunday.
