Catching up on Wednesday’s news:
Chicago Bears: Receiver Devin Hester sat out of practice Wednesday because of a sprained ankle. Hester relieved concerns by saying he would play Sunday against Arizona, but his absence was nevertheless a surprise. … Defensive tackle Tommie Harris (knee) practiced on Wednesday for the second time this season, but this time he was a limited participant.
Detroit Lions: Receiver Calvin Johnson (knee) worked with the first team during practice, and coach Jim Schwartz said he is “making progress.” There seems to be some optimism that Johnson will play this week at Seattle, but we won’t know for sure until Sunday morning. … Running back Kevin Smith (shoulder) didn’t practice Wednesday. Could this be an excuse to give Maurice Morris additional snaps?
Green Bay Packers: Veteran Mark Tauscher got the majority of the practice repetitions at right tackle, and it appears he is in line to reclaim the starting job from Allen Barbre. Based on coach Mike McCarthy’s comments Wednesday, it appears Chad Clifton could return Sunday as the left tackle. The Packers will keep trying different combinations until they find something that works. … Five starters sat out practice Wednesday, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers (feet), cornerback Charles Woodson (hip), receiver Donald Driver (neck), tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) and center Jason Spitz (back). Of that group, Finley and Spitz seem unlikely to play at Tampa Bay. Rodgers is expected to resume practicing Friday.
