Good morning and ROARRRRRRRR!
It's quite obvious that Detroit Lions rookie Ziggy Ansah won't play in Thursday night's preseason finale at the Buffalo Bills. The big question is whether he'll be ready for Week 1 of the regular season against the Minnesota Vikings.
Ansah hasn't been on the field since leaving Sunday's practice with a towel draped over his head. Local reporters noted he had appeared shaken up during Saturday's practice but had returned. Coach Jim Schwartz has refused to identify Ansah's ailment, but his absence from Wednesday's annual kickoff luncheon fueled speculation he has a concussion, as Josh Katzenstein of the Detroit News writes.
True preparations for the Vikings game won't begin until after Labor Day, but it's difficult to know whether Ansah is close to a return or not.
Continuing around the Lions' den:
Among the five Lions players that Paul Pasche of the Oakland Press will be watching Thursday night: Cornerback Ron Bartell and receiver Kris Durham.
Justin Rogers of Mlive.com will be focusing on linebacker Travis Lewis and cornerback Chris Greenwood, among others.
Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press on Greenwood: "The Lions still aren't sure what they have in last year’s fifth-round pick out of Albion. He seems too rare to give up on, but with a crowd at cornerback, his injury history and the need to win now, he needs to flash a few reasons he’s worth keeping."
Chris McCosky of the Detroit News has the status of all Lions position battles.
It appears that undrafted rookie offensive lineman LaAdrian Waddle is a lock to make the team, according to Birkett.
Lions running back Reggie Bush on the slow start of the running game, via Kyle Meinke of Mlive.com: "We're getting there. It's a work in progress, but I definitely feel like we're making steps in the right direction. The offensive line has done a great job of blocking. They're getting better, and we're getting better too. We just have to continue to work at it and obviously the more games you can play the better you'll get and the chemistry will get. It's taken a little time, no doubt, but we'll figure it out."
Here's my post on Lions backup quarterback Kellen Moore, who figures to play plenty Thursday night.
