Time for Banjo to play on defense?

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Don’t be surprised to see Chris Banjo get some playing time on Sunday against the Washington Redskins.

The rookie safety is the logical -- and for that matter, only -- choice if the Green Bay Packers feel the need to make a change at safety.

That’s something the Packers likely are considering after how poorly Jerron McMillian and, to a lesser extent, M.D. Jennings played in Sunday’s season-opening loss at San Francisco. Each gave up a touchdown pass against the 49ers.

According to ProFootballFocus, the 49ers targeted McMillian six times and he allowed catches on all six for 57 yards -- and had four missed tackles. Jennings did not have any missed tackles but allowed three catches for 39 yards in four targets, according to PFF.

Banjo could see some playing time even if safety Morgan Burnett, who missed the 49ers game because of a hamstring injury, returns against the Redskins. Burnett practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday.

“Banjo was up last week, so we’re getting the guys that are healthy ready to play,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “As for what, if or when his opportunity comes, that’s what the games are for. We’re definitely getting him ready.”

Banjo, an undrafted free agent from SMU who was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars on the eve of training camp and signed with the Packers on July 29, made the roster as the fourth and final safety thanks to a strong preseason. He played only four snaps on defense against the 49ers but saw extensive action on special teams.

“Regardless of whether my name gets called or not,” Banjo said, “I’ve just got to be ready to go.”
