Measuring NFC North fandom

12/4/2009

For a while now, I’ve been meaning to pass along some interesting poll results that -- in my humble opinion -- suggest the NFC North is one of the two most popular divisions in the NFL.

The people who run The Harris Poll conducted a scientific poll of 2,334 American adults in September. The 1,194 who said they follow professional football were asked to name the two teams they most root for.

Three NFC North teams ranked among the top 10 teams, the same showing as the NFC East. Here is that portion of the Harris list:

1. Dallas Cowboys

2. Pittsburgh Steelers

3. Chicago Bears

4. Indianapolis Colts

5. New England Patriots

6. Green Bay Packers

7. Philadelphia Eagles

8. New York Giants

9. Tennessee Titans

10. Minnesota Vikings

I think it was particularly important to conduct the poll early in the season, when all fans are optimistic about their teams. I’m sure the results would be different now for teams like the Bears that have had disappointing seasons.
