We've had several discussions recently about "franchise players" in the philosophical sense, here in the black and blue division. We've seen Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers receive a $63 million contract extension. We've heard rumblings about similar numbers for Chicago quarterback Kyle Orton, and we've seen a once-and-perhaps future franchise quarterback in Daunte Culpepper sign with Detroit.
We've watched Minnesota defensive end Jared Allen pile up seven sacks in the first half of the season, helping teammate Kevin Williams do the same. Packers cornerback Charles Woodson has blanketed top receivers and snagged four interceptions. Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield has two game-changing sacks, while tailback Adrian Peterson is on pace for a 1,600-yard season.
Which brings us to this week's "Have at it" question: Who is the NFC North's "division player?" Let's frame the debate this way: If you could start a team with one player from the NFC North, who would it be? Many of you might feel obligated to choose a quarterback, given how important the position is. So if that's the case, feel free to give us your non-quarterback choice as well.
As always, use the comments section below or hit the mailbag. We'll publish a sampling of your answers along with my own take on Friday morning.
Here are some pertinent statistics for your reference, but don't feel limited by this list. Have at it.
