If you’re the conspiratorial type, you’re going to raise an eyebrow when a team with an unsettled coaching situation sends out a press release that says: “The Chicago Bears will hold a press conference tomorrow, Tuesday, January 5, at 2 p.m. CT.”
And that’s it.
There was no mention of who will speak or what will be discussed.
All I can say is this: Nothing has happened Monday to suggest that Bears coach Lovie Smith will be fired. There is likely to be some change among assistant coaches, but that has been the case for some time. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune notes that Monday went much differently than the Monday before former coach Dick Jauron’s firing in 2003.
Absent the dismissal of Smith, Tuesday’s press conference is more likely to be of the season-ending review variety, one required by NFL media rules.
If anything suggests otherwise, we’ll let you know.
