Vikings can't use Los Angeles as leverage

We have two interesting developments on Minnesota’s stadium front this week. The first came from the Southern California business group trying to lure a franchise to play in its newly-approved stadium.

The company, Majestic Realty, won’t attempt to recruit any team in active discussions with its current locality to build a new stadium. That includes the Vikings, who are hoping to get the issues addressed in the 2010 session of the Minnesota state legislature. The company’s top priorities are Buffalo and Jacksonville.

That means Majestic isn’t willing to serve as leverage for teams to get better deals at home. In essence, the Vikings won’t be able to issue a “build or else” ultimatum to Minnesota politicians. They won’t become a candidate to move to Los Angeles until they formally give up their attempts to remain in Minnesota.

But that doesn’t mean the Vikings won’t continue to foster that idea. The second development was the length of their just-announced contract with KFAN-1130 AM to continue serving as their radio flagship. The deal is for two years, meaning it extends through the 2011 season.

The timing is no coincidence. Their lease at the Metrodome expires after 2011, and the Vikings have a policy of making no long-term business commitments in Minnesota beyond that time.
