EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- You knew it was coming, right? Technically, Sunday could be Brett Favre's final NFL game. One of these years, a decision to retire is going to stick. Will it be this year?

Favre laughed when a reporter asked him about it Wednesday. “Nice try,” he said. Favre, 40, claimed he hadn’t thought about his future and said it would be a “shock” if he was doing anything next week other than preparing for the NFC Championship Game.

Favre
“I just haven’t thought about what next year will be like, or what I will be doing next week,” Favre said. “Would I consider this, or will we sit down and talk about the future? I really haven’t.

“I don’t know what will happen from the end of the season on. And the good thing is, our success this year has been very helpful in not having to talk about that. We’ve been more focused on how the team is doing. I hope that continues. That’s the only reason I came back, and I know this opportunity doesn’t come around that often. Hopefully we can make the most of it and see what happens.”

Favre signed a two-year contract in August and would make $13 million if he played for the Vikings next season. His status will immediately become the organization’s top priority whenever the season ends, but let’s just say it could get complicated.

The Vikings have no obvious replacement on their roster; the struggles of Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels last summer prompted Favre’s arrival in the first place. But Favre has already set the precedent of un-retiring after training camp.

So among many other things, the Vikings would have to decide how long to wait on his decision. If he announces his retirement, the Vikings would have to determine whether they think he will abide by it or if they might be able to talk him into playing at a later date.

I got out of the business of predicting Favre’s moves sometime last summer. All I can do is suggest you stay tuned.
