Whither the schedule?

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Lost in the shuffle of Tuesday’s overtime rule-change was the curious case of the NFL’s unannounced opening weekend/Thanksgiving games.

The league almost always offers that preview to its upcoming schedule during the owners meeting. As of Tuesday morning, there were rumors of massive NFC North involvement in the games that were to be announced, but a league spokesman said the schedule was still under development and that no announcement would come at these meetings.

We can only assume there has been pushback from some team involved in one of the games, but we may never know the full answer.

As we’ve discussed previously, there have been indications that Minnesota and New Orleans would open the season Sept. 9 at the Superdome. There have also been indications that as many as three NFC North teams could play on Thanksgiving.

We already know Detroit will play New England. Chicago’s official Twitter feed hinted last week that the Bears could play at Dallas. And I was told that initial versions of the schedule had an NFC North team playing at the New York Jets on Thanksgiving night. The Vikings and Packers are the two division teams scheduled to play at the Jets this season.

As always, we’ll keep you updated.
