Black and Blue all over: Bears and Allen

If there was any doubt about why Chicago coach Lovie Smith attended South Florida's pro day last week, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune has the answer: Smith had breakfast with safety Nate Allen before the workout and was determined to find out whether Allen would be worth the cost of trading up to draft him.

Allen is considered a mid-second round pick, putting him out of reach for the Bears, whose top pick is currently at No. 75. As Biggs points out, the Bears would probably have to put themselves in an early hole for 2011 in order to move up 30 spots or so this year to draft Allen. But you don't have to tell many Bears fans that the safety position is in significant need of an upgrade.
