Waiting on QB starters

If you're like me, you're starting to get preseason fever. It's only FOUR DAYS until some NFC North teams start putting on real game jerseys with real game helmets for (semi-) real games. And so naturally, our thoughts turn to the pair of Black and Blue teams with legitimate quarterback competitions in training camp. Who will start the preseason opener and what does that mean about their competition?

As of Tuesday, the respective coaches were refusing to answer that question. Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said he has made a decision about Saturday's starter against Atlanta but hasn't informed the primary participants, Daunte Culpepper and Matthew Stafford. An announcement could come later this week.

Meanwhile, Minnesota coach Brad Childress said he hadn't decided whether Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels would start Friday at Indianapolis.

From everything I can gather, both races are close through the first two weeks of training camp. If that's the case, who would you start?

Here's one thought: Start Stafford and Rosenfels to see how they respond.

In the Lions' case, they should have a pretty good idea of what they have in Culpepper. He is entering his 11th season and knows how to handle a preseason game. I'd be more interested in seeing how Stafford handles the bright lights and the anticipation of knowing he would start several days in advance. It wouldn't necessarily signify he is winning the competition, but instead would serve as a high-profile test.

The same goes for Rosenfels. Although he is in his ninth season, Rosenfels has never entered a preseason with a legitimate chance to be the starter. Let's see how he handles the best situation he's ever been given.

Agree? Disagree? Don't care? Want me to wake you up when the regular season starts? Just let me know below.
