Matt Kalil among combine's fastest linemen
By Kevin Seifert
INDIANAPOLIS — There is no longer any doubt about Matt Kalil's status in the 2012 draft, not after an impressive workout Saturday. From this point forward, the question for the Minnesota Vikings will be whether he is available when they pick No. 3 overall, not whether he is the best player available.
Kalil ran the 40-yard dash in 4.96 seconds, a number that remains unofficial Saturday morning but is significant nonetheless. (*Update: Kalil's official number is 4.99 seconds.) As of this moment, it's tied for second-best time among all offensive linemen at the combine. I know that 40 times for offensive linemen have limited relevance, but for Kalil it's a reflection of his advertised athleticism and a justification for his limited weight gain during offseason workouts.
Kalil displayed no strength concerns, finishing 30 repetitions of 225 pounds.
As we discussed Friday, the Vikings are purporting to be in the midst of discussing whether an elite tackle or additional offensive playmakers should be their top priority. But if they remain at No. 3, it's hard to imagine them passing on Kalil if the St. Louis Rams don't select him at No. 2.
