Charles Woodson 'not opposed' to safety

Charles Woodson's appearance Tuesday on ESPN 540 in Milwaukee was notable for several reasons, but mostly because he landed in the same camp that we have on his possible shift to safety following the release of Pro Bowler Nick Collins.

When we last hit this topic, we noted the move would only make sense if the Packers established a reasonable replacement for Woodson first. A year ago, we might have considered Sam Shields a strong candidate, but Shields took a step back in 2011. Perhaps rookie Casey Hayward could rise to that spot, but for now there might not be an obvious replacement to justify a switch.

"I think that it comes down to what the other guys are going to be able to do as far as the cornerback position is concerned," Woodson said. "If one of those guys can take over that role and make the plays that need to be made at corner … with Nick Collins leaving, [and if] they need me to play safety, I'm not opposed to that. But I think that we have to make sure that cornerback position is going to be solidified and we're comfortable with who is going to be out there at the corner."
